Would you like to to be able to focus on your goals and your journey?

Do you want to focus on progress and not perfection?

Join us in this amazing interview with Sara Russell, where she reveals parts of her life that can help you discover things you haven’t known about.

What is your definition of success?

I define success as steady, dynamic improvement. It’s about continually growing and learning. Success means facing and overcoming adversity with courage. It means not hiding mistakes or living in shame but learning from the past.

What do you fear the most?

I think what I most fear is the idea of living paralyzed by fear or by the belief that I’m somehow helpless or hopeless. In other words, what I most fear is being hostage to false and misleading beliefs that life is not dynamic and that I can’t shift things.

What qualities do you admire in others?

I admire courage, humor, resilience, integrity, creativity and hard work in others. I admire people who persist and try new things when what they’ve tried in the past doesn’t bring success. High ethical standards and respect of others is incredibly important, so some financially successful or famous people don’t have my admiration in spite of their success and fame.

What area of life makes you feel the best?

I love finding the beauty and wonder in what many would think of as everyday and boring. I also love spending time with my family, focusing on being over doing. I enjoy the nature around me, the starlit sky, the rhythm of the seasons, the sunrise and sunset, the colors of the trees, the changing of the light.

I adore the voice of the river and the singing of the wind through the trees. I love my work – listening to my clients’ stories and making connections that will help them build a tool kit they can draw from to reach their goals.

Is there anything you can’t let go, but you know you should?

Letting go can be a long process but it’s really important! To me, “I can’t let go” is sort of like saying “I’m giving up”. So I may not have completed all the letting-go processes of my life, but they are definitely in progress!

What life experience changed the way you see and define life?

Discovering that I have a chronic hereditary illness was definitely life-changing and perspective-shifting. Everyone in my mom’s side of the family, including myself, was basically a “collector” of numerous odd diagnoses and symptoms. It was a relief to discover that there was a relatively simple and streamlined explanation as opposed to a continuous cascade of unusual misfortunes!

My experience of being considered a “medical mystery” for about 20 years definitely inspired me to study health and appreciate the intricate workings of the human body. This was one of the driving factors behind leaving my career teaching at the university level and re-training as a nutritional therapist.

When life pushes you over, how do you react?

When life sends a complicated problem my way, I may try a variety of approaches, depending on the situation. I work through the problem and talk about it with people I trust. Sometimes I work around complicated problems by thinking ouside the box. Sometimes I fight back. Sometimes I re-think my whole strategy and seek out a different paradigm.

Who/what motivates you the most?

I am most motivated by my family and the beauty and power of nature. These are my foundational pillars. And there are the surprises that come along in life. When problems come up, I’m motivated to solve them!

What qualities do you have that others should possess?

I think we all have our own unique strengths and gifts, so I don’t expect others to be like me. Others admire me for my resilience, my hope in the face of adversity and my ability to make connections that a lot of people may not see.

I love seeing that others have strengths that are different from mine, for example musical talent. However, I do find integrity, honesty and respect to be incredibly important qualities that serve as a baseline for good communication, friendships and society.

What words of wisdom would you share with our community?

Focus on your goals and your journey. Remember that we are all on a journey, and sometimes it may look like others are ahead of you. But life is not a race. Focus on progress, not perfection. Reach out for help when you need it. And as final words of wisdom, here’s one of my favorite lines from my father’s poetry: “Life is a celebration, not a search for success.”
