We are excited to present to you our first Motivational Blogger of the Week, Komal Munawar!

She has a very unique and really inspiring story. We were thrilled to hear her responses to our questions and share them with our community. Her task was fairly simple, 10 questions to answer with at least one or two paragraphs, and expound the answers as long as she wanted.

What is your greatest fear?

Living an unhappy life. I’ve struggled with my happiness a lot. Having to constantly cope with anxiety and depression has made me very sensitive towards it. I’ve worked hard to bring myself on the path of happiness and I don’t want to lose it.

What life lesson did you learn the hard way?

I’ve learnt that from the very beginning we are fed with a script of life, especially in the culture I come from. We plan all our lives according to that script; go to college, get a job, work, get married, have kids etc. What we tend to forget is that each and every person’s life journey and capabilities are different. If everything happened at the same time for everyone we would all be robots. Trying to hold on to the script cost me my health. I pushed myself too hard before I realized that I don’t have to. I can follow my own path at my own pace.

What did you learn recently that changed the way you think?

Expanding on the previous question. Once I accepted the fact that I’m not going to follow the chalked-out road or try to follow irrational expectations, I was liberated. Doing things that I love on my own speed has given me so much inner peace. It’s like my mind has broadened and there are a lot more possibilities now. I don’t just make important life decisions because they are expected of me. I take time to evaluate if they will make me happy or not.

What is the difference between living and existing?

I’d define living as thinking by and for yourself. Trying to understand more rather than reacting, setting your own goals and defining your own happiness. Existing is when you let others think for you and just go about life doing what is expected of you.

What lifts your spirits when life gets you down?

I try to set some small goals or give myself small achievable tasks in such situation. Once I start working on that goal I have less time to focus on what got me down in the first place. Achieving small successes reminds you that not all is lost in life and you have a lot to work with. Oh, and nothing gets my spirits up more than having a giant bowl of noodles with a Gilmore Girls binge watch.

What is your definition of success?

Being able to afford myself the necessities of life, being completely at peace with myself and having people in my life that accept me as I am. Success for me also means having invested in something that makes the lives of other people easier and building myself a simple life that is focused more on value and experiences rather than materialism.

What advice can you give to someone who is losing hope?

I would tell them to re-evaluate their definition of success and happiness. Rethink what would make them happy and start working on it. Try to indulge in a positive activity and practice the art of letting go. I would also advise them to only think about the past if they can derive a lesson from it.

Why do you want to inspire and motivate others?

I have been a victim of anxiety and depression for the most part of my life. I still struggle with it sometimes but I have come a long way and I feel good now. I do not want anyone else to have to go through it. When you are in that state of mind it is easier to think that only you are suffering from it. A little bit of perspective at that time can work wonders and that’s what I want to do. I believe I can use my suffering as a lesson and help people cope with theirs.

Who motivates you?

I think I motivate my own self the most. I have a few really understanding and supporting friends who helped me keep perspective in the most troubling times. It is extremely important to have a support system when you are down and need motivation.

How do you sustain self-motivation when you suffer a setback toward your goals?

I’ve talked about it in my blog post and here as well. I initially give myself some time to accept and digest the fact that a certain goal of mine has not been accomplished.

Then, I try to find something that will keep me going in the right direction instead of just stopping altogether. I set small achievable takes that I can accomplish and that can help me gain back my confidence. The key is to not just stop rather slow down and gather yourself before hitting full throttle again.

“I’ve learnt that from the very beginning we are fed with a script of life” <- I have come to the realization of this. Work and some aspects of life is scripted. Like we have to be in a certain pattern or be prescribed a certain lifestyle to live. No thank you!

  21. She is so motivational! Great to find out that she is a self-motivated person. Standing on our own is what will build us so established..
